These are just some of the cool and interesting things happening in Cardiff over the next few months. I’m not trying to be as comprehensive as I have been in previous events roundups. Check out Steve’s post at SEOno for more cool things happening this month.

CryptoParty Cardiff – 22nd September 2012

CryptoParty With our rights to privacy online being eroded away little by little every day, now is a great time to learn the basics of cryptography. CryptoParty is a free and independently run initiative to promote the use of encryption tools and other ways to stay safe and secure online.

This first Cardiff event, organised by Joe Yeates, will be held upstairs at O’Neills, Trinity Square, starting at 10am and running ’till late. Registering at Eventbrite is not essential, but would help the organiser get an idea of numbers.

Follow along on Twitter at @CryptoParty and #CryptoParty.

Cardiff Design Festival 12

Cardiff Design Festival – Friday 28th September until Sunday 14th October 2012

There’s almost too much cool stuff to mention happening at this year’s Design Festival, but highlights for me will probably be the Ignite talks and Content: Magazine in a Day (the latter of which I’m signed up to participate in). Also, Burning Red are going to be busy this year running their Design-a-Day, releasing a podcast every day and hosting the excellent Design Wars again.

Follow @cardiffdesfest for updates.

WordPress Users Wales – Tuesday 9th October 2012

WordPress heart logoThe next WordPress usergroup meet-up is going to be a bit of a ‘plug-in love-in':

We thought we’d crowdsource best plug-ins for various purposes in WordPress, and attempt to identify if there is a dream-team of plug-ins, that all WordPress users can benefit from…

I’ll have to make a shortlist of a few dozen of my favourites!

This will also be an opportunity to check out the new Indycube in Castle Arcade. Kickoff is a little earlier than usual: 5.30pm – 7.30pm. Sign up on Eventbrite.

Canton Social Media Surgery – Wednesday 7th November 2012

The next Canton SMS is at the usual place and time (The Cwtch in Chapter, 4.30pm – 7.30pm). If you would like help and advice about how to best utilise social media, I can highly recommend these social media surgeries.

I’m highlighting it in this round-up because of a potentially fascinating talk (followed by a Q&A) from Barrister David Hughes: What you can and cannot say on Twitter, Facebook and blogs.

Drawing on his experience, David will talk about the legally safe usage of social media, pitfalls to avoid and the type of things one can and cannot say.

Sounds like something every serious blogger should learn about.

And don’t forget to watch out for any upcoming Cardiff Blogs and unified.diff gatherings!
